Plainsmen Establish Ground Against Pioneers

The Plainsmen baseball team would host the Miles CC Pioneers for a three-day, six-game series at home at Plainsmen Park.  Northeastern has been right on the cusp of winning numerous game throughout the month of March, but have always seemed to be dealt an unlucky hand.  With the month of April now upon them, the Plainsmen were looking to turn things around with their series against Miles.

The first game would be a battle between both of the teams.  The Plainsmen would be able to keep MCC scoreless in the game, their last push for points would not come until the bottom of the sixth inning.  The three runs in the bottom of the sixth and Gunner Pickett's pitching would seal Northeastern's 5-0 victory in their first game.  Game two was another close game as both teams were trying to battle the below ideal field temperatures.  Northeastern would fall behind 1-0 in the top of three, but would gain the lead in their at bat to make it a 3-1 ballgame.  The Pioneers would make it a 3-2 game with a run in the top of the fourth, but the NJC would extend it to a 5-2 game in the bottom of five.  Miles would try to get some runs back, but could only muster up one point as Graham Cahill and seven defenders behind him would keep that from happening.  The Plainsmen would go on to win 5-3.

Day two for the Plainsmen was phenomenal to say the least.  Scoring would come early and often for the men as they would score 25 runs off 21 hits.  Northeastern would score in each of the innings: 10, 6, 7, and 2, with the Pioneers getting their lone points off a two shot homerun in their final at bat.  The Plainsmen would win the game 25-2 with Jordan Cappell getting the win, and Chance Dunker finishing the game.  The second game of the day was much closer for the boys.  Northeastern would gain the 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second, and would extend it to a 4-0 game in the third.  The final at bat for the Plainsmen would be good as they would score two additional points.  The Pioneers would get their three points in the top of seven, but the deed was already done as the NJC would be victorious 6-3.  Cole Halpin would get the win for NJC, and Trystan Kimmel would come in and relieve in the final inning.

The final day was another great day to be a Plainsmen.  The boys would defeat the Pioneers again in both games, with NJC winning 11-1 in the first game, and getting another "W" in the second with a 9-4 score.  These wins for the Plainsmen help get them back on track in the Region IX standings.  The men will have a few days off before they host McCook at home on Friday April 13.
