Baseball Falls to Trinidad on the Road

Mar. 3, 2019, Sterling, Colo. — The Plainsmen baseball team traveled to play their second conference game this past weekend against the Trinidad State Trojans. Northeastern looked to gain a few more conference wins under their belt to help them make moves in standings. 

In the Plainsmen's first game, they fell 13-9 to Trinidad on Friday despite out-hitting them 11 to ten. Northeastern opened up scoring in the second inning when Carter Allen tripled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs. The Trojans took the lead for good with four runs in the third inning by scoring four runs. Northeastern tallied four runs in the second inning.

Dylan Norsen, Matthew Armendariz, and Allen powered the big inning with RBIs. Trinidad countered by scoring four runs in the sixth inning.

Cole Halpin took the loss for the Plainsmen. He allowed six hits and nine runs over five and two-thirds innings, striking out six.

Northeastern tallied 11 hits. Ben Newton, Rosalio Mayo Ibarra, Jaxon Rosencranz, and Norsen each collected multiple hits. Newton went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead in hits. 

In their second game, the Plainsmen had a tough time generating runs on Saturday, dropping their game 10-3. Northeastern had the 3-2 initially in the third, but the Trojans pulled away for hood in the fourth. Jordan Chappell started the game for the Plainsmen. He lasted two and a third innings, allowing two hits and two runs while striking out two. Cameron Spaeth and Gunnar Foegen entered the game as relief, throwing two and two-thirds innings and one inning respectively. 

Jaxon Rosencranz went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Northeastern in hits. 

In their third game the Plainsmen battled to take the lead, but one bad inning ended up costing them. Northeastern collected eight hits and Trinidad had ten in the high-scoring affair.

The Trojans opened up scoring in the second inning by drawing a walk, scoring one run. 

The Plainsmen notched four runs in the third inning, and then scored its runs in the fourth on an RBI grand slam by Sean Kelsen. 

Trinidad got in a groove to score five runs in the fourth inning. Northeastern countered and scored one run in the top of the fifth, but Trinidad answered with one of their own. The Plainsmen scored when the Trojans pitcher had a wild pitch and allowed one run to score. Trinidad then answered when Northeastern walked the batter on bases loaded, scoring one run. 

Tanner Schoeninger took the loss for the Plainsmen. He went three and a third innings, allowing eight runs on five hits and striking out two.

Offensively, the Plainsmen had eight hits in the game. Ben Newton and Colton Horn each racked up multiple hits as each managed two hits to lead the team. 

Northeastern's next scheduled game is against the Williston State Tetons in Pueblo, Colo. on Thurs., Mar. 7.
