Plainsmen Split At Home Against Cougars
Mar. 20, 2019, Sterling, Colo. — The Plainsmen hosted the Western Nebraska Cougars for a two game series in a Region IX conference matchup. Northeastern knew the Cougars could catch fire if they presented them the opportunity, so they tried to keep their game tight. In the end they would split the series 1-1 at Plainsmen Park.
In the first game, Northeastern stayed in it until the end, but the Cougars pulled away late in a 10-8 victory. Despite the loss, the Plainsmen collected 14 hits in the high scoring affair. The Plainsmen got on the board in the first inning when Dylan Norsen's sac fly scored one run. They then knotted the game up at six in the bottom of the fifth inning. Rosalio Mayo Ibarra drew a walk, scoring one run. It was the sixth that caused them troubles when the Cougars put up six runs to the Plainsmen's two, which is how the game ended 10-8.
Tanner Schoeninger was on the mound for Northeastern. He allowed seven hits and nine runs over five and two-thirds innings, striking out one. Cameron Phillips threw one and one-third innings out of the bullpen. Offensively, the Plainsmen tallied 14 hits in the game. Andrew Paige II, Ben Newton, Carter Allen, and Norsen all collected multiple hits. Newton and Paige II all had three hits to lead the team.
The second game was where Northeastern locked in and played a full seven innings. The Cougars jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but the Plainsmen pulled ahead with three runs in the third inning when Ben Newton homered on a 0-1 count, scoring two runs. The other run came in on Andrew Paige II's sac fly.
Halpin got the win for Northeastern. He allowed six hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out six.
Davyn Adamscheck led the Plainsmen with two hits in three at bats. Northeastern was sure-handed and didn't commit a single error. Jordan Garcia made the most plays with eight.
Northeastern will be at home again at Plainsmen Park on Saturday as they host the Otero Rattlers with first pitch at 2 p.m. for one-nine inning game.
