Plainsmen Basketball Start Season Well

The Plainsmen basketball team began their 2017-2018 season in Garden City against two tough teams.  The men were excited to start their season, and both the teams they were matched up against were teams they could beat if they played their game well.  The Sunrise Christian team had some players who have committed to top tier programs, so they could not be overlooked.

In the game against Sunrise, the Plainsmen knew if they ran their offense effectively and played sound defense, they had a good shot at defeating them.  With the game starting, the men were able to score first and take the early lead.  The Plainsmen would gain a 10 point lead over the Buffalos, but missed shots and fouls allowed the Buffs to get back into the game with four minutes left in the half.  With the first half ending, Northeastern would lead 36-33.  In the second half, the Plainsmen would take control and dominate the Buffalos by outscoring them 41-32, which would give them the 77-65 win.

Marcus Burwell would lead the Plainsmen in scoring with 28 points by going 11/17 from the field and Keishon Parker would be second in scoring with 11 by going 5/11 from the field.

The next day, the Plainsmen's matchup would be against Cedar Valley College.  The Plainsmen did not know much about this team, but if they worried about how they played their own game, the Plainsmen would not have any trouble with them.  The game would start with the Plainsmen going on a 15-6 run to give them the early lead.  The Suns however would make a comeback and make it a four point game, but NJC would still lead 21-17.  At halftime, Northeastern would lead by 10 with a score of 34-24.  In the second half, the Plainsmen would keep their scoring coming, but the Suns would almost match them point for point.  With the game still separated by ten, and with less than five minutes in the game, the Plainsmen decided to open up the game.  Northeastern would come away with the victory with a score of 69-50.

Marcus Burwell would once again lead the charge in scoring with 18 points and two assists.  Keishon Parker would be next with 12 points, four rebounds, two assists.

The Plainsmen's next game will be at home on November 8 as they host Northwest Kansas Tech JV.  Come out and watch some basketball and enjoy some hamburgers as the Beef Boosters will do their annual hamburger fry.
