Plainsmen Fall In Overtime To Mavericks

In their final regular season road game, the men from Northeastern would travel to Goodland, KS to play against the Northwest Kansas Tech Mavericks.  The Plainsmen were on the wrong side of the scoreboard last time they played at home, losing to the Mavs by 10.  They were looking to get redemption, and the men have typically played better on the road, so everything was adding up for it to be a good game.

From the start, both teams were able to score the ball when they wanted, and as the first seven minutes would pass, the Plainsmen would only trail by one, 12-11.  The next few minutes, NJC would find themselves weathering the Mavs storm, as they would go on a 10-3 run.  But just as the weatherman would predict, the sun would shine through, and the Plainsmen would tie it up at the six-minute mark, then take the lead 31-29 with 4:19 remaining in the half.  The first half would end with Northeastern leading the Mavericks 43-35.

In the second half, the Plainsmen would do their job early and keep the Mavs at arm lengths away from the lead.  The first five minutes would pass in the half with them in the lead, but with 14 minutes left, the Mavs would start scoring with the Plainsmen not being able to answer.  The Mavs would bring it within two points before NJC would answer.  They would answer with a few points of their own and take their lead to now nine.  With less than seven minutes to go, the Plainsmen would have a seven-point lead over Northwest.  The Plainsmen would keep that lead, and even extend it to a 10-point lead.  But around the three minute mark the Mavs would make their comeback.  With 1:18 in regulation, the game would be tied at 75.  Northeastern would be the first to break the tie and go up by two, but the Mavs would tie it back up, and eventually send it into overtime.

In overtime, both teams were playing great defense and were occasionally allowing their opponent to score.  With 3:08 to go, Marcus Burwell would make a layup to tie the game at 81, which would be the Plainsmen's last basket of the game.  Northeastern would get ice cold, which would be their demise, as they would fall to the Mavs 90-81.

The Plainsmen will be at home for their final regular season game as they host the Peterson Air Force Base for Sophomore night.
