Plainsmen Couldn’t Overcome Generals in Second Half

Jan. 10, 2019, Sterling, Colo. — After nearly a month off, the Plainsmen basketball team hosted the Sheridan College Generals. The Plainsmen had been practicing for a week since returning from break, but the men were happy to get back to playing games. The Generals were a great match for the men, so they needed to play solid to get the victory.

Right away, the Generals took an early lead over the Plainsmen 10-6, but Northeastern went on a 7-0 run to now lead 13-10. The game progressed and Northeastern kept the pressure on and continued to score to keep their lead, 33-28. The Plainsmen were lead in scoring in the first half by Mo Diallo with 11 points. Nikolas Lange was next with nine points.

The second half began just as the first did with both teams exchanging points, and both teams playing solid defense. The Generals were able to tie the game up at 36, then take the lead with a pair of free-throws. The Plainsmen had a few open looks, but were unable to drain them when they needed. After a few frustrating possessions, Northeastern took the first timeout of the half with 16 minutes left on the clock. After the timeout, Sheridan went on a 14-2 run before the Plainsmen could get their offense regrouped and start to chip away at the Generals' lead. In the next five minutes, both teams played great defense and with eight minutes remaining, the score read 54-40 with Sheridan holding their lead. As time progressed, the Plainsmen were unable to break within ten points of Sheridan, but a three by Wade Kellogg sparked Northeastern as they gained a few points back. The Plainsmen had a hard time getting up and down as Sheridan drew fouls in the paint, giving them free-throw opportunities. Northeastern was unable to bridge the gap and fell to Sheridan 72-59.

Northeastern will be back at home for a string of home games starting on Wednesday, Jan. 16 as they host Lamar Community College, but not before they travel to Colorado Northwestern on Saturday.
