Northeastern Golf Travels to McCook

McCook, Nebraska...

The Northeastern golf teams competed in their second tournament of the Fall season this past weekend in McCook, Nebraska.  With both the men and women's teams coming off of a second place finish at Riverton, they would have some work ahead of them to have a similar outcome with the McCook course adding some pressure of being a more difficult place to play.  Per usual, the two day tournament consisted of play at 12pm on Thursday, September 2nd and 8am on Friday, September 3rd.  The Plainsmen and Plainswomen will have to stay resilient during their play as the competition continues to heat up in the conference.

The Plainsmen golf team came out firing the first day with the majority of the team shooting a better score on Thursday than Friday.  However, that doesn't bode to well when trying to chase a better finishing spot when the majoirty of the opposing team players in the tournament shot better on the second day.  There was a total of 38 male competitors from six different colleges fightinig for the 1st place finish, with two Northeastern players breaking into a top ten finish.  Most notable of the Plainsmen players was freshman Matthew Campbell, who shot a 74 both days for a total of 148, which was good enough to get him in a tie for second place.  Campbell's 148 two day performance was his best finish for the season, and his second place finish is the best for the Plainsmen this season.  Also edging into the top ten with a tie for 9th place was freshman Jackson Rottschafer.  His two day total of 152 at McCook was six strokes worse than his 3rd place finish the preivous week in Riverton.  Sterling locals Trey Kuntz and Chase Hume both finished respectively in 13th and 15th place.  Overall, the Plainsmen finished in 3rd place with a day 1 team total of 309 and a day 2 total of 306.  Even though the NJC two day team total score was only good enough for 3rd place, they were only 5 strokes behind 2nd place and 14 strokes behind 1st palce.

For the Plainswomen, they were only able to travel with three players for the McCook tournament.  For NJCAA scoring formats, a team must compete with a minimum of 4 players.  So unfortunately, the team as a whole had to take a DNF (did not finish).  However, the three Plainswomen golfers did compete on their own with Annabelle Flores leading the scoring with a two day total of 209 (108-101), good enough to take 6th place.  On a positive note, all three Plainswomen did shoot better on their second day of play.

Both the Plainsmen and Plainswomen golf teams will travel to Torrington, Wyoming this Thursday (9/9) and Friday (9/10) to compete in the Eastern Wyoming College two day golf tournament.  Tee times for the tournament are at 1pm on Thursday and 9am on Friday.  Players will get to enjoy playing at the Cottonwood Golf Course of Torrington, a challenging yet beautiful course located near the North Platte River.
