Plainsmen Golf Wins Eastern Wyoming Tournament

Torrington, Wyoming...

For the first time in the Northeastern men's golf program history, the Plainsmen walked away with a first place finish winning the Eastern Wyoming College tournament!  Coming off a couple strong finishes in the past two tournaments, Northeastern puts out a huge showing with several players shooting in the 70's, even one player shooting in the 60's.  The Plainsmen continue to play strong during the Fall season in which the incoming freshmen have really gotten off to a nice start in their Northeastern careers.  Along with the great play this past week, the Plainsmen broke two more program records during their outstanding play.  For the second time this season (and both rounds in tournament), Northeastern broke their single day scoring record on Friday with a 285, beating out the previous record of 292 which was shot a day earlier on Thursday.  They also set a new record for a two day scoring total with a total of 577.  The Plainismen beat out the hometown team by 5 strokes for a two day total on their own course.

Once again the freshman went on a tear for the Plainsmen golf team.  Northeastern placed three players in the top ten for the Eastern Wyoming tournament, all three freshman.  Leading the way for the men's golf team again was freshman Jackson Rottschafer, who finished with an incredible 5 shots under par, and a two day total score of 139 (69-70).  Rottschafer's performance came up one stroke shy of tying the first place finisher Conrado Chozas from Eastern Wyoming College.  Coming in with a tie for 6th place was freshman Matthew Campbell who performance this year has been outstanding as well.  Matthew had a two day total score of 144 (74-70), a score that sets his new best round as a Plainsmen.  Freshman Trey Kuntz also for the first time this season broke into a top ten finish as he has been on the cusp of that feat the past two tournaments.  Kuntz came in with a tie for 9th place with a two day total score of 145 (75-70), which included an under par round on day two.  Chase Hume, Mateo Salcido, Mason Bernard and Alex Tanner all recoreded at least one day of scores in the 70's.  Coach Vern Harbart couldn't be more pleased with the play from his men's team as they continue to set the bar high for the 21-22 season.

The Plainswomen also took three competitors to the tournament.  Even though that NJC cannot cast a final score as a team because they didn't have a fourth player, they still competed at Eastern Wyoming.  Annabelle Flores led the Plainswomen with a two day score of 214 (111-103), followed by sophomore Kylee Monaco's 216 (116-100) and Adiya Robbins brought up the rear with a 261 (129-132).  They each respectively took 7th, 8th and 9th places iin the women's competition.

The fourth tournament for the Northeastern golf team will take place Thursday, September 16th and Friday, September 17th.  Northeastern gets to stay at home this time around with golf competition taking place on their home course of Sky Ranch.  Tee times will be 1pm on Thursday and 9am on Friday.  The Plainsmen are hoping to have back to back 1st place finishes as they compete at home, which would be another first for the program.
