Plainsmen Cage Hawks

Plainsmen Cage Hawks

In recent Plainsmen soccer action, the men played host to the Northeast Community College Hawks.  The guys wanted to build off their last two wins by adding this one up as well.  With their shin guards in and cleats tied, they took to the pitch.

The first half proved to be a good one for the Plainsmen as they were aggressive with their passes and kept attacking the Hawks defensive zone.  It wasn't until the 41st minute of the half when Mustafa Nadeem passed through a few defenders for Joseph Godoy to blast one past the Hawks keeper to go up 1-0.

Although they were ahead, in true Plainsmen fashion, kept attacking and trying to add more points to the scoreboard.

As the time ticked away, the buzzer sounded in the first half and NJC lead 1-0.  Groves emphasized playing their game and taking the opportunities that were given to them by the Hawks defense.

The second half started and the Plainsmen were able to control the tempo.  It was in the 52nd minute when Joseph Godoy weaved past defenders and was tackled in the penalty box, which would lead to a penalty kick.

Godoy placed the ball on the spot, lined up and took aim.  The ref blew the whistle to initiate the kick, Godoy made his approach, and connects with the ball.  As the ball soared through the air, the goaltender dives for the save, but anticipated it the wrong way and the ball gracefully lands in the back of the net.

That penalty kick would give NJC a 2-0 lead, which would eventually lead to their win.

"We felt this was our best performance of the season," added Groves. "I thought in the midfield we were quite good.  We could have added a few more but their goalkeeper was outstanding, so fair play to him."

The Plainsmen are back in action again tomorrow (Saturday September 2) with the game starting at 5pm.
