Home Opener Shutout

Aug. 28, 2018, Sterling, Colo. – In the home opener, the Plainsmen soccer team played host to the Colorado Northwestern Spartans. The Plainsmen recently came off a two-game loss in Utah versus Salt Lake Community College and Snow College, so the men were itching for a win. With the weather shaping up to be a warm one and the wind looking scarce, the stage was set.

The men started with a small chip on their shoulders, and it showed in this game. There was an extra fire under the players' feet, which would translated to numerous goals being scored throughout the game. The first half was the exclamation point in the game as the men scored five of their six points in that time. Maurice Von Winkler scored two goals for the Plainsmen in the first half, Gaetan Garcia and Matis Castillon each scored one, and the Spartans scored an own goal. The Spartans had a tough time mounting a comeback as the momentum was clearly on Northeastern's side.

In the second half, the sixth and final goal was scored by Jean Carre in the 70th minute. That goal was the straw that broke the camel's back, and the remainder of the game was on cruise control. The game finished with the Plainsmen getting a shutout and Dillon Rudd was perfect in the net.

The Plainsmen will have a few days off before they travel to Goodland, Kan. to play against the Northwest Kansas Tech Mavericks on Thursday Aug. 30.
