Northeastern Draws against #7 Ranked Barton

Aug. 30, 2019, Sterling, Colo. — The Plainsmen soccer team kicked up their competition this year by scheduling top ranked teams in the country. The scheduled seventh ranked Barton Community College (BCC) and 11th ranked Iowa Lakes Community College. Both teams help Northeastern's clout when trying to be ranked and compete on a national level. Their tie with the Cougars helped put their name as one of the best in the nation.

Northeastern opened their season with two wins at home, and that momentum carried into their first road game with BCC. In the first half, the Cougars showed Northeastern why they were ranked seventh in the nation by scoring in the first two minutes of the game. That quick goal took the Plainsmen by surprise, as they now had to play catch up for the rest of the game. With the first half ticking away in the last six minutes, Ben Ashfield scored the equalizer, giving the Plainsmen some energy going into halftime.

In the second half, both teams battled for position and scoring opportunities, but the Cougar and Plainsmen defenses put up a strong front as neither allowed the other team to score. At the end of regulation, the game remained a 1-1 tie and headed to overtime. In overtime, neither team could capitalize on chances and the first overtime ended, which sent it to a second overtime. The Plainsmen needed to act fast because if no team scored, it ended in a draw. Despite the Northeastern's best efforts, the game ended in a 1-1 tie, making their overall record 2-0-1.

The Plainsmen head to Utah for games against Snow College and Salt Lake Community College over the weekend.
