Late Goals Push Plainsmen To Victory
Sept. 4, 2019, Sterling, Colo. — Seeing how a team comes back from two tough losses is a way to determine if a team is good or great. The Northeastern Junior College (NJC) soccer team showed they were great after defeating the Western Nebraska Community College (WNCC) Cougars 4-1 at home. The Plainsmen were put on their heels early, but faced that adversity straight in the eyes and brought the fight.
The game began with WNCC coming out and scoring in the first four minutes of the game to give the Cougars the 1-0 lead. Northeastern realized the Cougars were a team to be reckoned with. The Plainsmen did not back down as Ben Ashfield scored the equalizer late in the first with Jason McCormick and Paul Caliari getting the assist. The game went into overtime as a 1-1 tie.
In the second Wissem Obeid scored in the 67th minute to give NJC the 2-1 lead. Northeastern knew they needed to keep the pressure on the Cougars to keep them on their heels. The pressure paid off late in the game as Scott Phillip Woods scored the third goal and Slayter Adolsek with the final fourth. Both goals took place the final seven minutes of play.
That win brings the Plainsmen record to 3-2-1 overall before they head to Iowa to play top ranked teams on Sept. 7 and 8 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
