Plainsmen improve to 3-0 in Region IX

Northeastern Men's Soccer (6-4-1, 3-0-0) won their third consecutive Region IX Conference match against Central Community College-Columbus on Friday, Sept. 20 with a 3-1 score.

After a strong start, freshman Maurus Frey sent an assist over the defenders to sophomore Quentin Hornung who scored his fourth goal of the season to give Northeastern the early lead six minutes in.  Central countered with a goal in the eighth minute by Luis Tovar who scored from inside the penalty box to draw the match even at 1-1.  Following the Raider goal, the Plainsmen took control of the match and the tempo.

With a 1-1 half time draw, the Plainsmen focused on increasing pressure.  The unrelenting pressure on offense and defense eventually led to their opponent breaking down and Northeastern was able to find the game-winning goal in the 68th minute. With a line-splitting pass from freshman Alex Champavert that sliced through defenders, Quentin Hornung was able to net his fifth goal of the season.

As Northeastern continued their tight grasp on the match they were comfortable seeing it out through controlled possession. Sophomore Jason McCormick added a second insurance half-volley goal on an assist from freshman Ariel Ben Garcia.

Northeastern outshot Central 28-3 and currently are in second place in Region IX with a perfect nine points after the first three matches. Next up are a pair of Region IX home matches on Friday, Sept. 27 vs Sheridan at 3:00 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 28 vs Gillette at 4:00 p.m.
