Plainswomen Win Two Against Knights

Plainswomen Win Two Against Knights

Mar. 28, 2019, Sterling, Colo. — The Plainswomen softball team finally caught a break in the weather and were able to play in sunshine. The weather brought new life to the team and gave them the spark they needed against the North Platte Knights.

In the first game of two, Northeastern took a few innings to get things going for them. The Knights took the initial 3-1 lead through five innings. In the bottom of the fifth, the ladies found their rhythm and knocked in four runs to take the 5-3 lead. Defensively, the Plainswomen held them scoreless again, then turned around and batted through the order, which resulted in their 11-3 win.

Getting the first win was challenging, but for the Plainswomen wanted the sweep. They started the game off right by timing up the Knight's pitcher and led 5-2 after the first inning. They extended their lead by three in the second, but North Platte fought back by getting two in the third. Northeastern maintained the pressure and tacked an additional three runs to make it an 11-4 game. The fourth inning mirrored the third as the Knights scored two and Northeastern three. With the run rule in effect, the Plainswomen just needed to keep North Platte from scoring. Delaine Woolsey did that in her pitching by forcing the Knights into groundouts and pop flies, giving Northeastern the 14-6 win.

The team will travel this weekend by first playing in La Junta, Colo. against Otero Junior College on Sunday, Mar. 31, then follow it up on Monday, Apr. 1 with a double header against the Trinidad State Trojans.
