Apr. 3, 2019, Sterling, Colo. — The Plainswomen softball team had a big road trip this past weekend as they traveled to southern Colorado to play against Otero Junior College (OJC) and Trinidad State Junior College (TSJC). Both Region IX conference games consisted of two games against both opponents. Currently as the Plainswomen sit in standings, they needed to get a few of these games to keep their post-season dreams alive.
Their first day of games were in La Junta, Colo., to play against the Rattlers. Northeastern was unable to get things going and lost by an 8-0 shutout. Their second game was much better as the Plainswomen scored runs in the second to take the 3-2 lead. The Rattlers regained the lead in the bottom of that inning by scoring five runs. Northeastern chipped away and battled back to make it a 7-5 game in the top of the third. After that however, OJC was able to keep getting players around the bases, keeping the Plainswomen at bay, resulting in 14-6 loss for Northeastern.
Day two was a different team and different outcome for Northeastern as they played against the Trojans from TSJC. The game was a stalemate until the top of the third when the Plainswomen broke the ice to make it a 1-0 game. Trinidad tied the game in the bottom half of the inning, but Northeastern took it back in the fourth. The Trojans were once again able to put runs on the board and took the 3-2 lead in the bottom of four. In the bottom of six, TSJC put a string of runs on the board to take the 9-2 lead. In the final inning, the Plainswomen went on a roll to score five runs, but the Trojans held them off to give Northeastern the 9-7 loss.
The final game of the trip was the best for the Plainswomen as they finished with a win by defeating the Trojans 3-2. The ladies started things right by scoring one and led 1-0. Shortly after TSJC took the 2-1 lead before Northeastern could strike again. The fifth inning was when the final run of the game scored to give the Plainswomen the 3-2 lead, which resulted in the win.
The Plainswomen will be off for a few days before traveling to McCook, Neb. to play against the McCook Indians on Saturday, Apr. 6.
