Northeastern Jousts Lancers

Northeastern Jousts Lancers

Jan. 14, 2019, Sterling, Colo. — The Northeastern Plainswomen had the solo game of the night as they hosted the Eastern Wyoming Lancers. The ladies come off a tight win against Sheridan Colleges and wanted to get another win over the Lancers. Both teams matched up equally on paper, so it was anyone's game.

The first quarter the teams had a hay day shooting as it seemed like both teams rarely missed. At the end of the quarter, Northeastern led by three, 20-17. The second half was not as pretty as both teams tired, which led to turnovers and missed layups. The Lancers were able to come back and take the halftime lead 34-31.

The second half was the time for the Plainswomen to mount their comeback. Right away it looked as if Northeastern was going to pull away in the third quarter with their execution of their offense. Before the Plainswomen could get into their groove, Eastern Wyoming got a few transition layups to keep the game within two points. At the five-minute mark, Northeastern was able to get on a roll again and gain a slight lead on the Lancers, to go up 53-46. With just over two minutes left in the third, Eastern Wyoming called a timeout hoping to ice the Plainswomen. The Lancers were able to sneak a few points back, but Northeastern still led 55-51 at the end of three.

In the final quarter, the Plainswomen had their ups and downs. There were times when Northeastern missed layups, but then stopped the Lancers on defense and came back to make a three-pointer. Eastern Wyoming did capitalize on a few of the Plainswomen's mistakes and took a two-point lead. With four minutes left in the game, Tashika Burrell passed it to the wide open Alyzae Davis who knocked down the three, giving the Plainswomen the 65-60 lead. In the last three minutes of the game, the Lancers made their comeback by getting transition points while Northeastern could not get the shots they wanted. Eastern Wyoming was then only down by a point with less than a minute left, trailing 67-66. Northeastern did not panic and advanced the ball past half, forcing the Lancers to foul. Tashika Burrell stayed clutch at the line and made both, sealing their 69-66 victory.

Northeastern begins conference play this Wednesday as they host Lamar Community College with tip off at 5:30 p.m.
