Plainswomen Finish Streak of Home Games with a Win

Jan. 25, 2019, Sterling, Colo. — In yet another Region IX South game, the Plainswomen team hosted the McCook Indians. Both Northeastern and McCook are sitting 2-1 in conference, so this game was equally importantly for both teams. The Indians are a fast-paced team who like to get out and run, so the Plainswomen needed to be ready for not only the sprint, but for the marathon as well.

The first quarter was a flat-out race from baseline to baseline between the two teams. Whether the Plainswomen scored or the Indians got a defensive rebound, McCook was looking to kick the ball up the court for a layup. The Indians were able to get quite a few points on fast-break layups, which Northeastern needed to adjust to. At the end of the first, the Plainswomen led 23-17. The second quarter was much like the first as McCook tried to advance the ball up the court quickly, but Northeastern made adjustments and made them earn their points. At halftime, Northeastern held their lead with a score of 43-36.

For the Plainswomen to be successful, they needed to stop the downhill drives by the Indians. If they could do that, McCook's game plan would crumble. Unfortunately, Northeastern could only slow the Indians down as they still were able to get a few more fast-break layups. Despite allowing layups, the Plainswomen countered with points of their own and held the game 60-54 lead. The fourth quarter was all Northeastern as McCook ran out of gas, and the Plainswomen buckled down on defense and boxed out.

Their 69-58 win over the Indians make them 3-1 in conference, which helps them as they head into their first conference road game against Otero in La Junta, Colo.
