Plainswomen Win on Sophomore Night

Plainswomen Win on Sophomore Night

Feb. 24, 2019, Sterling, Colo. — In their final regular season game of the year, the Plainswomen basketball team hosted the Otero Junior College Rattlers. The ladies had the second seed in the south locked in, so winning or losing this game wouldn't affect where they sit but Northeastern still wanted to win to improve their overall record.

The game began with Northeastern and Otero exchanging points for the first eight minutes. The Rattlers hung in the game by going backdoor on the Plainswomen to get layups. Northeastern adjusted defensively and started to knock down shots against the Rattlers 2-3 zone defense. Northeastern went on a 15-2 run to lead 29-14 with five minutes remaining in the first. Northeastern retained their 40-20 lead at half with rebounding on the offensive and defensive ends.

The second half Otero played much better defense as Northeastern's shooting cooled down. The Rattlers fed their post and crashed the boards to get second chance points against the Plainswomen. Otero cut the lead down to nine, but Northeastern knocked down big three pointers before the quarter and kept their lead in double digits at 63-47. The final quarter was all Plainswomen with everyone from the starters to the bench getting in on the action. Northeastern went on to win 74-55 over the Rattlers.

The Plainswomen will get a first round bye and will get any automatic bid to the Region IX tournament, which is held in Scottsbluff, Neb. Northeastern will play on Thursday, March 7 with time and opponent still to be determined.
