Back To The Swing Of Things

The Plainswomen golf team participated in their first tournament of the spring season by traveling to La Junta, CO as Otero would host.  The first day would be the only full round as day two would have wind gusts that made it impossible to golf,  so the golfers would only be able to golf nine holes.  The team was anxious to get back into the rhythm of practicing and playing week in and week out. 

The first day, Caitlyn Jacobs would lead the pack after shooting an 87.  Right on her tail was Rachel Rael and Baily Kreider with them each finishing with a 95.  Jessica Salazar would miss one put to put her one stroke behind those girls as she would post a 96.  With all of the girls sitting in either first, second, and third, it would come to the second day to see who could hit in the easy ones to allow them to take the lead.  With the winds howling, and balls sailing, the second day really gave a wide spread in scores.  It all depended upon who was able to keep the ball the lowest and who could control it.  Once the round was completed, Jacobs would finish in second with a score of 143.  Salazar would finish in second with a 144, one stroke away from second, and Kreider would have a 146.

The Plainsmen golf team would also play very well.  Playing in the same conditions as the women proved to be very difficult.

The first day, Brett Mattson would have a solid round as he would shoot a 71, which would put him in a tie for fourth place, only one shot off the lead.  Other Plainsmen were Logan Wood shooting a 78, Bryce Bivins with an 80, Tate Higgins with an 85, Bradon Baxter shooting an 89, and Cody Hurtado finishing with a 93.  The next day would prove to be the most difficult as wind would play a factor.  Balls were not sitting on the green as they were blown off, shots being uncontrollable, and flying debris hitting the golfers.  After just nine holes, the meet was called and scores were tallied.  In the end, Brett Mattson would finish with a third place finish after shooting a 113, only two strokes behind the leader.  Overall the team would finish in fifth place with a score of 480. 

The teams will travel to Lamar as the Lopes host the next rounds of play on Wednesday and Thursday March 28 and 29.
