Mustangs Overthrow Plainsmen

With the campus being on fall break, the students have a time to take a break from their studies and prepare for the final weeks of the semester.  But for the wrestling program, it's an opportunity for the athletes to focus on their matches ahead of them when they travel to Western Wyoming.  The Plainsmen knew that the Mustang program is a well ran program and would have some tough competition ahead of them, but nonetheless they wanted to do what they do best; wrestle.

The Plainsmen would start behind the eight ball, as they would forfeit their first match-up in the 285 class.  So right off the bat the Plainsmen would trail 6-0.

The first faceoff would be the 125's as Collin Metzgar would represent NJC.  Metzgar would be taken down and get behind 2-0.  Next he would be pinned at the 1:23 mark, which would give the Mustangs another six points, and now the Plainsmen trail 12-0.

In the 133's, Paul Cooksey would be up for the Plainsmen.  Cooksey would get behind by being took down for two points, and then have a near fall for another two points.  At the end of the first period, Cooksey would be behind 4-0.  In the second, Cooksey would choose to be up and would have that reversed on him for two, then have a near fall for another two.  At the end of two, Cooksey would need to make up some room after now being down 8-0.  The Mustang opponent would choose to be neutral in the third and Cooksey would get on the board with a takedown for two points.  But in the end, Cooksey couldn't make up the difference and lose 10-2.  That loss would give the Mustangs four points and extend their lead to 16-0.

In the 141's Sammy Eckhart has had success quite a bit this year, and looked to keep it up in this dual.  Right away. Eckhart would get a takedown for two and a near fall for four, but then allow his opponent to escape for one.  At the end of the first period, Eckhart would lead 6-1.  In the second, the Mustangs would choose neutral to start and then get a take down for two and then a near fall for four.  From there that position the Mustangs would get an escape for one, and at the end of two periods, Eckhart would lead 12-2.  In the third, Eckhart would choose neutral as well and to start.  Eckhart from there would dominate the Mustang opponent and eventually win 17-4, to give the Plainsmen their first points of the match, but still trail 16-4.

Ernie Quintana would wrestle in the 149's.  The matchup would not last long as he would be pinned early at the 1:03 mark, which would give the Mustangs another six points, and now the Plainsmen trail 22-4.

Deron Solomon, who was recently featured in our student-athlete spotlight, would wrestle in the 157's.  The first period would go scoreless, and the second period Solomon would choose to be down.  Right away, he would get an escape for one point.  That would be the lone point of that period, and Solomon would lead 1-0.  In the third period, the Mustangs would choose down, and as a result get an escape for one point from it.  Next, the Mustangs would get a take down for two, and now lead.  From that takedown, Solomon would get an escape to bring it within one.  The period would end however and Solomon would lose in a 3-2 decision, which would give the Mustangs three points and extend their lead 25-4.

Justin Anderson would be the one to represent the Plainsmen in the 165-weight class.  In the first, he would be taken down and at the end of the period, he would trail 2-0.  In the second, the Mustang would choose to be down, and as a result would get a two-point reversal.  Next the Mustang would get a near fall for four points, for a total of six points and would now lead Anderson 8-0.  In the third, Anderson would choose neutral.  The rest of the period, he could not overcome his deficit and would lose 11-0; now Plainsmen trail 29-4.

In the 174's. Kaelan Jones would wrestle for Northeastern.  In this match-up, Jones would not fair so well as he would be taken down, then be pinned at the 1:12 mark.  With that pin, the Mustangs would extend their lead to 35-4.

Jose Rodriquez would be up next as he would wrestle in the 184's.  The first period was exciting as the Mustang would get a takedown, but Rodriquez would get an escape.  Right after that, another takedown would happen, but then Rodriquez would escape again.  After that, Rodriquez would get a warning, then be taken down for another two points.  At the end of the first, Rodriquez would trail 6-2.  To begin the second, Rodriquez would choose to be down, which would ultimately be his demise as he would be pinned at the 4:38 mark.  That pin would make it tough for the Plainsmen to make a comeback as the lead would be extended 41-4.

In the final match of the night, Dylan Buschow would wrestle in the 197's.  To start, the Mustang would take down Buschow for a two, then a four point near fall would give the Mustang a 6-0 lead to end the first.  In the second, the Mustang would start off being on top, and as a result would get a two point neat fall, and then would pin Buschow at the 3:37 point.  That final six points would take the total to 47-4.

The Plainsmen will have a little break before traveling to Golden, CO as they will dual against Colorado School of Mines on December 1.
