Plainsmen Host Conference Duels

Plainsmen Host Conference Duels

The Plainsmen grapplers had back-to-back duels this past weekend in a home stand versus Northwest College and Western Wyoming.  The double-header duel would prove to be a test of their stamina and challenge their skills.  The men were ready for the challenge, as their first one would start against Northwest College.

Ernie Quintana would be first for the Plainsmen and would lose by a pin in the first period.  Next for NJC would be Deron Solomon who would end up losing in a 3-1 decision.  Justin Anderson would represent in the 165's and would defeat his opponent in an 8-7 decision and would bring the team score to 9-3 with NJC trailing.  Juan Gomez would get a forfeit win for an easy six points to bring the score to a 9-9 tie.  Jose Rodriquez in the 184's would be pinned in the third period, and Dylan Buschow would even the score right back up at 15 with a forfeit.  The Plainsmen did not have a heavyweight so they had to forfeit that division, which would make them trail by six once again.  In the 125's. Collin Metzgar would win in a 5-2 decision to help inch their way back into it, but still trailing 21-18.  Paul Cooksey would be up and would have a few less points then his opponent and lose in a 16-10 decision; NJC trails 24-18.  Last up would be Sammy Eckhart who would get a pin in the first to even the score at 24.  With the final score tied at 24, the match would come down to criteria, in which the Plainsmen would not have the advantage and would not get the point resulting in the 25-24 loss.

The next duel would be against Western, and last time they met could not get things rolling.  This time they were hoping to get back in the saddle and get some more points on the board as a team.  Ernie Quintana would be up first and would be pinned in the first period.  Next would be Deron Solomon who would get a major decision win with an 8-0 score.  That would bring their team score to within two of Western Wyoming, but still trail 6-4.  Justin Anderson would be up in the 165's and would have a chance at getting the victory but could not reverse his opponent and lost in a 6-5 decision; NJC trails 9-4.  For the 174's Juan Gomez would have a rough outing and would be defeated by pin in the first period.  Jose Rodriquez would represent for the 184's and could not find his groove and lost by tech fall.  With the team score being 20-4, the Plainsmen would have some catching up to do.  For the 197's Dylan Buschow would try his hand but would be pinned in the first.  The Mustangs would get the forfeit win in the heavy weight division to extend their lead 32-4.  The Plainsmen would get those points back as Collin Metzgar would get the forfeit win in the 125's to bring the score to 32-10.  Paul Cooksey would be next for the 133's and would be defeated in a major decision score of 12-3.  Last up would be Sammy Eckhart and would get the 9-0 major decision win.  The final score would end up with the Plainsmen falling to the Mustangs with a score of 36-14.

The Plainsmen will host their final home duel on Saturday January 27 as they host the Otero Junior College Rattlers.
