Plainswomen Fall With Late Goal against Cougars

Sept. 12, 2018, Sterling, Colo.- In a recent home stand for the Plainswomen, the ladies squared off against the Cougars from Western Nebraska Community College. Both teams were evenly matched, so the game would come down to who could execute their schemes better. The sun was out, the pitch was mowed, and the teams were ready to play.

The Plainswomen's philosophy was to apply pressure to the Cougars and keep them in their defensive zone. Their plan took some time to pay off, as the Cougars took a 2-0 lead. Their attack ended with Emali Ortega assisting Jaycie Dillenburg as she pounded it into the goal. The half ended with the Cougars having the 2-1 lead. The second half continued with the same plan by staying aggressive and keeping the Cougars out of range of scoring.

The second half was a much better half for the Plainswomen, as they had much more scoring opportunities. The game stayed a 2-1 game until a centering pass by Northeastern was put in the back of the net by the Cougars for an own goal. With the score being tied at two a piece, the Plainswomen stayed on the attack. Kyley Leatherwood had a breakaway attempt, but the high-lofted shot hit the crossbar and denied the Plainswomen of a goal. The ladies had another attempt with a cross pass that missed slight left of the goal. Being aggressive on offensive does have its downfalls, one of which is if the opponents get a break, it leaves defense vulnerable. That vulnerability cost Northeastern as the Cougars had an opportunity to take a shot from deep, which carried over Nohelia Pena's head for a late goal for Western Nebraska. With little time remaining, the Plainswomen tried to make a run, but were unable to get a goal, resulting in the 3-2 loss.

The Plainswomen will be back at in tomorrow as they host Western Wyoming at 11 am.
