Double-Overtime Tie For Plainswomen

Double-Overtime Tie For Plainswomen

Oct. 11, 2018, Sterling, Colo. – The Plainswomen soccer team traveled to Scottsbluff, Neb. recently to play against the Western Nebraska Cougars in a Region IX South Divisional game. Northeastern will still make the playoffs, but every win counts towards their seeding and who they play.

One factor that came into play, which always seems to come earlier than sometimes wanted, was snow. The change of weather in this geographical region caught many people by surprise. Regardless of how hard the wind was blowing and how much snow was coming down, the Plainswomen knew that they and the Cougars both had to play in it, so they may as well win.

The elements played a factor right away as both teams were trying to get warmed up and get a feel for how the pitch played. As the game progressed, Western Nebraska scored the first goal of the game in the 24th minute to take the 1-0 lead. Once the Plainswomen got their feet under them, they tied the game in the 34th minute as Jaycie Dillenburg scored from the foot of Emali Ortega. Halftime came and the game remained tied 1-1.

In the first ten minutes of the second half, Western Nebraska scored again in the 55th minute to regain the lead at 2-1. Once again, Northeastern answered the call in the 63rd minute as Macy Gurule scored the unassisted goal to make it a 2-2 game. Throughout the rest of the game, neither team could bury one in the net, and the game went into overtime.

In overtime, the Plainswomen had one-one-one opportunities, but the Cougar goalkeeper made the saves to keep the game even. Northeastern also had another chance to get the walk-off win in the form of a penalty kick, but the Cougar goalie snuffed out the attempt and made a great save. The game went into double overtime, and the same song and dance ensued as neither team could get a goal and ended in a 2-2 tie.

The Plainswomen's final home game of the season will take place on Saturday Oct. 13 at 11 a.m. as they host Northwest College. Come out and support your sophomores during their last home game as a Plainswomen.
