Plainswomen Soccer Concludes Season

Oct. 22, 2018, Sterling, Colo. – The Plainswomen soccer team concluded their season on the road in the opening round of Region IX playoffs. The ladies traveled to Cheyenne, Wyo. to play the higher-ranked Eagles, and aimed to upset the home team. These teams had never played each other this year, so neither had any advantage over the other. 

The game began and the Plainswomen set up to play a defensively heavy match. When speaking to head coach Ken McAlpine after the match, his game strategy was to play a strong defensive game and try to send it into penalty kicks after overtime. If the Plainswomen could have had more bodies back on the defensive line to prevent the Eagles from getting any chances, Northeastern could have worn them out and set them up for a potential victory late in the game. The defensive scheme worked all through the first half as it ended in a 0-0 tie. In the second half, everything was going to plan as well, until a foul was called on the Plainswomen setting the Eagles up for a set play. The Eagles were able to score off that chance giving them the 1-0 lead. Although the Plainswomen now trailed, their tactic stayed the same by playing strong defense, but they now needed to take advantage of opportunities offensively and get one by the goalkeeper. Before the Plainswomen were able to get an offensive break, the Eagles scored again, which took them to a 2-0 lead from a penalty kick. The rest of the game Northeastern tried to make a comeback, but was never ever to do it and lost 2-0. 

That loss finishes the Plainswomen's season with an overall record of 4-11-1.
