Bio

Coach Shane Gertner joined the Northeastern softball program in the spring of 2016. Since joining the program, they have increasingly won more games than the previous year with just seven his first year to winning 24 games the last. During his time, the program has had five All-Region IX players along with one 2x Fast Pitch News First Team All-American (Gracie Cordova). In addition, the program has been able to place players at various four year schools. The softball team has an academic first mentality, which paid off as they finished the 2019 fall semester with a team GPA over a 3.0.

Gertner was born and raised here in Sterling and played basketball collegiately here at Northeastern Junior College, for now, head coach Eddie Trenkle from 2005-2007. While he was here he compiled a record of 65-4 and won Region IX his sophomore year. During his sophomore year, they were ranked fourth in the country and finished seventh in the national tournament while never losing a home game in the two years he played in The Bank of Colorado Event Center.

Coach Gertner began his coaching career here at Northeastern Junior College in 2014 as the second assistant coach for the men’s basketball team. His first year with the basketball team they finished 23-9 and was ranked 24th in the country.  He would serve as an assistant for two more years by helping bring in players in from all over the country. While on staff he was in charge of out of state recruiting and working at the front desk of The Bank of Colorado Event Center.  In his three years on staff, he helped the Plainsmen win 53 games.

Making the move from the Northeastern basketball staff to the softball staff was an easy move for Gertner. Gertner is especially excited to use his recruiting connections not just in Colorado but also throughout most of the county to help bring in girls for the up and coming softball program. “It’s a blessing to still be a part of the NJC family and to be able to coach at the college I played at. I want to personally thank Coach Myers, Coach Trenkle, and Marci Henry (AD) for this great opportunity and the chance to continue representing the black and gold.”

Coach Gertner lives in Sterling with his fiancée Kelsey and children Andre, Camden, Jayla, and Jax.
