Plainsmen Open Season Against Broncbusters

Plainsmen Open Season Against Broncbusters

Feb. 5, 2019, Sterling, Colo. — The Plainsmen baseball team opened their 2019 season by hosting the Garden City Broncbusters at Plainsmen Park. Northeastern was ready to get the season started after a positive fall ball season. The Broncbusters were in town for four games, and with the sun shining, the first pitch was thrown.

The first game started rough for the Plainsmen as they fell behind 12-1 after the third inning. They tried to gain some runs back in the fifth, but could only get three in. The men eventually went on to fall 14-4 to Garden City. Northeastern wanted to put that game behind them and gear up for game two. Northeastern played much better defensively in this game, but still trailed 2-0 going into the fourth. One error in the fourth allowed the Broncbusters to get a couple runs in, making it a 7-0 game. The Plainsmen finally got in the groove in the last four innings by scoring at least two runs in each of them. Their deficit was too much however and lost 13-9.

After getting the first day jitters out of their system, the Plainsmen prepared for two more games. Each game against Garden, Northeastern settled down and played better. Their first game on Saturday began with Garden taking the 1-0 lead, which stayed that way until the fourth when they extended it 3-0. Northeastern scored three in the fifth to make it a 6-3 game. The sixth inning was a tough one for the Plainsmen as they allowed six runs to come across home. The game ended with Garden City on top 14-3.

The fourth and final game was when Northeastern got their win over the Broncbusters. The Plainsmen broke the ice in the second by scoring two runs. Garden took the 3-2 lead in the third, and then extended it to 5-2 in the sixth. The Plainsmen made a comeback in the bottom of seven by tying in 5-5, sending the game into extra innings. The game went four more inning until Northeastern got a run to win the game in the 11th inning. Northeastern went 3-1 on the series, but saw what needed to be fixed before heading into their next games.

The Plainsmen will travel to Liberal, Kan. on Saturday Feb. 9 as they play the Seward County Saints. A two-day, four-game double header will be played on Saturday and Sunday.
