Apr. 9, 2019, Sterling, Colo. — The Plainsmen baseball team had a long three days of games against the Southeast Community College (SCC) Storm. The Storm are the newest members to come up to Division 1 within the Region IX, so Northeastern did not know what kind of team they would be. Typically, teams who make that transition up in divisions take time to acclimate to the competition. The Plainsmen found out they needed to play their best to not allow the Storm to catch them on their heels. To make things more interesting, Northeastern had to play SCC six games in three days.
In the first game of many, the Plainsmen had a big fourth inning with five runs coming across the plate in the 9-2 win. Batters contributing to that stat included Jaxon Rosencranz, Ben Newton, and Dylan Norsen, who all earned RBIs in the inning. Tanner Schoeninger was the winning pitcher for the Plainsmen as he lasted seven innings, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out seven and walking zero.
Game two was a much tighter game until the Plainsmen ran off with the lead late in the game in a 5-4 victory. The game was tied at four with Northeastern batting in the top of the seventh when Andrew Paige II's sac fly scored one run for the team.
Cole Halpin pitched Northeastern to victory. He lasted six and two-thirds innings, allowing six hits and four runs while striking out nine. Juan Esparza threw one-third of an inning in relief out of the bullpen. Esparza recorded the last out to earn the save for the Plainsmen.
Sitting at two wins after day one was a great start for the men, but day two still was yet to be played. Despite out-hitting SCC, the Plainsmen fell to the Storm 3-1. The men fell behind early and were unable to regain the runs needed to come away with the victory. Sean Whalen took the loss for the Plainsmen. He lasted two innings, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out three.
Beating any team that many games in a row is a tough task, and the Plainsmen found that out the hard way. Game four went much better for the men as they defeated the Storm 15-2 thanks to a timely nine runs in a big third inning. Praxie Vigil got the win as he allowed six hits and two runs over four innings, striking out five and walking one. Jonah Coleman threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.
The Plainsmen traveled home for the final two games in their six-game bill. Despite giving up three runs in the third inning, they still defeated SCC 12-3. In the second, the Plainsmen got on the board with five runs with Rosalio Mayo Ibarra getting two of them with a single. The third inning was another big inning with six runs led by Rosalio Mayo Ibarra, Carter Allen, Davyn Adamscheck, and Jaxon Rosencranz, who each had RBIs in the inning. Jayden Smith took the win for the Plainsmen as he lasted three innings, allowing four hits and three runs while striking out four and walking zero. Jordan Chappell threw four innings in relief out of the bullpen.
The final game was rough when Northeastern struggled to get their offense going as they lost 8-1. Southeast scored four runs in the seventh inning to seal their win. Cameron Spaeth took the loss for when he allowed one hit and three runs over three innings, striking out four.
With that series behind them, the Plainsmen will travel to McCook, Neb. to play against the Indians over the weekend.
