Northeastern Competes In Arizona

Northeastern baseball kicked off their 2022 season this past week as they made the journey down to Arizona to play a multitude of teams.  During the road trip, NJC faced Pima Community College, Scottsdale Community College and Arizona Western College.  Although the Plainsmen were unable to get a win on the trip, they had some bright moments that helps build confidence in the players against tough ball clubs.  Outfielder Caleb Rozier for the Plainsmen got the nod for Player of the Week in Region IX.  Luckily Northeastern has a slew of home games in the following weeks that can help kickstart the season.  NJC faces Minot State JV on Wednesday, February 9th at Metro State in Denver.  First pitch is at 4:30pm.

(Game Recap 2/2) Plainsmen vs. Pima Community College = Loss 10-1

Breakdown: Pima was hot from the get go by scoring 10 quick runs by 5th inning.  Sage Ferguson picked up the start for NJC pitching 2 innings, giving up 6 hits and 4 earned runs.  Caleb Rozier went 2-2 with 2 doubles and Mason Sauter had a RBI hit.  Northeastern finished with 3 hits and 8 strike out's.  Pima CC had 13 hits and 2 strike out's.

(Game Recap 2/2) Plainsmen vs. Pima Community College = Loss 14-4

Breakdown: Game called in 5 innings.  Pima CC jumped out of the gates and took a 5-1 lead in the 2nd innning.  4th inning proved to be a tough one for NJC as Pima CC put up 7 runs.  NJC's Jackson Trout went 2-3 with a double and 2 RBI's.  The Plainsmen had 6 hits and 7 strikeout's.  8 players from Pima CC had at least 1 RBI.  Clay Sanger took the start for NJC, faced 12 batters over 2 innings, giving up 5 hits and 5 earned runs.

(Game Recap 2/3) Plainsmen vs. Scottsdale Community College = Loss 11-1

Breakdown: Tough outing for the Plainsmen as the pitching was a struggle.  SCC took advantage by hitting a home run and having 5 players with at least 1 RBI.  Mason Sauter for NJC was able to knock in the only Plainsmen run for the game.  Chase McCreath got the starting call and pitched just 1 inning giving up 6 runs and walked 5.  NJC had 4 hits and 5 strikeout's in the contest.

(Game Recap 2/4) Plainsmen vs. Arizona Western College = Loss 6-2

Breakdown: Arizona Western jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the 1st inning.  NJC only recorded 1 hit and 5 strike out's.  AWC had 11 hits and 7 strike out's.  Stevins Spurgeon faced 19 batters in 2.1 innings of pitching.  In those innings he gave up 8 hits, struck out 4 and gave up 4 earned runs.  Alex Alva manged to grab a stolen base in the contest.  Kaben Steenbock recorded the only hit and had 2 errors.

(Game Recap 2/4) Plainsmen vs. Arizona Western College = Loss 10-0

Breakdown: Game called in 5 innings.  NJC found themselves down 9 after just 4 innings.  Plainsmen had 17 at-bats, got 3 hits and struck out 9 times.  Ryan Jones took the mound for Northeastern in which he pitched 2 innings, giving up 1 hit and 3 earned runs with 4 walks.  Arizona Western had 6 players with at least 1 RBI.  Trey Adams went 2-2 with a stolen base and Jackson Trout recorded a hit as well.

(Game Recap 2/5) Plainsmen vs. Arizona Western College = Loss 6-5

Breakdown: Best game of the road trip for Northeastern.  A close fought game as NJC couldn't come up with the tying run in the 7th to extend the game.  NJC was able to out hit AWC 9-5.  Plainsmen had a total of 8 strike out's.  Jaylan Ruffin had a good game at the plate going 3-5 with and RBI and a stolen base.  Caleb Rozier went 2-2 in the contest knocking in 2 runs.  Sage Ferguson took the start for Northeastern and pitched 3 innings giving up 4 hits and 1 earned run.  Jeffrey Behrends ultimately took the loss for the Plainsmen.

(Game Recap 2/5) Plainsmen vs. Arizona Western College = Loss 11-4

Breakdown: Arizona Western found themselves up 6-3 after two innings.  The game stayed close up until the 6th inning when AWC unloaded in a 4 run inning.  AWC recorded 15 hits to Northeastern's 8.  Nick Schumacher went 2-3 from the plate, knocking in a RBI.  David Draayers also played well going 2-4 from the plate, recording a double and 3 RBI's.  Clay Sanger took the mound for his 2nd start of the season, and ended up taking his 2nd loss of the season.  Clay pitched 2 innings, faced 15 batters, had 4 strike out's, gave up 5 hits and 5 earned runs.  Juan Navarro went deep twice agasinst NJC recording 4 RBI's.
