McCook Steals Two in Weekend Series

McCook Steals Two in Weekend Series

Sterling, Colo...

Northeastern was looking forward to a conference series with the Indians as the Plainsmen had a better record and were playing pretty well.  The 2 day series included 3 games with 1 on Sunday and a double header on Monday.  A nice win on Sunday didn't carry any momentum into Monday for NJC as they got swept in the final 2 games.  Lamar Community College comes to town this coming weekend on March 5th and 6th to compete in a 4 game conference series (2 double headers) in which both teams currently hold overall losing records.

(Game Recap 2/27) Plainsmen vs. McCook CC = Won 10-8

Breakdown: Both NJC and McCook each had a big 5 run inning in the contest.  The Indians had taken the lead about halfway through the game, but the Plainsmen had a 7th inning rally to take the lead and finalizing the game.  Sage Ferguson got the start in Sunday's game.  He pitched 5 innings, giving up 8 earned runs on 8 hits, 5 of which were homeruns while striking out 4.  Brian Walters came in after Ferguson and was able to get a win, his 1st on the season.  Will Togher had one at bat in the game, in which he went yardball for a grand slam.  The Plainsmen stole 8 bases against the Indians, which helped keep the runners moving.  NJC recorded 7 hits and struck out 10 times in 32 at-bats.

(Game Recap 2/28) Plainsmen vs. McCook CC = Loss 11-2

Breakdown: McCook opened up the flood gates in the 1st game of the double header on Monday.  The Indians put up at least 2 runs in 4 of the 7 innings of the contest.  Northeastern came up with 6 hits in the ballgame, but also struck out 6 times as well.  Calvin Davis went 2-3 at the plate while Caleb Rozier and Mason Sauter each knocked in a run.  Charlie Hilgers managed a triple on his only plate appearance on the day.  Stevins Spurgeon took his 1st loss of the season on the mound as he faced 20 batters giving up 4 earned runs on 3 hits.

(Game Recap 2/28) Plainsmen vs. McCook CC = Loss 13-9

Breakdown: McCook scored a bunch of runs early while Northeastern made up for that deficit in the middle of the game.  The Indians scored 10 of their 13 runs in the first 3 innings, then added the last 3 in the ninth to lock in the double header sweep of NJC.  Northeastern couldn't get over the hump in a game that was winable.  Cole Adams took the start in the ballgame and was lit up early, pitching 1 inning and giving up 6 earned runs.  Mark Thurman took on 4 innings on the mound striking out 5 and giving up no runs.  Calvin Davis was solid from the plate going 2-4 with a homerun, a stolen base and 2 RBI's.  Third baseman David Draayers recorded 3 hits in 4 at-bats that included 2 RBI's.  NJC struckout 11 times, but had 12 hits compared to McCook's 14.
