Plainsmen Drop First Game Of The Season

Plainsmen Drop First Game Of The Season

Cheyenne, Wyo...

Northeastern men's basketball started the 21-22 regular season off with a trip up to Wyoming to face Laramie County Community College.  The Plainsmen are coming off of a national tournament appearance last season with quite of few of returning players on the roster again this year.  Although the season has gotten off to a rough start, there is still plenty of season left to get players dialed in and for NJC to continue its tough play throughout the conference.  Next up, Northeastern travels to Salt Lake City, Utah for a tournament.  One of their two games will be a good taste of stiff competition as they will face #1 nationally ranked Salt Lake City Community College.  Games take place on Friday, November 5th and Saturday, November 6th.

(Game Recap 11/1) Plainsmen vs. LCCC = Loss 83-74

1st Half - Plainsmen struggled early making shots and getting defensive stops against the Golden Eagles.  Two or three times NJC found themselves down by a double-digit margin, keeping the pressure on the Plainsmen to make stops and score points.  NJC did manage to get a lead about halfway through the half before a costly technical flipped the script and cost them the lead in which they never recovered.  A few of the players also found themselves in early foul trouble, leaving Coach Trenkle having to resort to his bench players to come up big.  NJC was down 42-34 at halftime.

2nd Half - Plainsmen intensity picked up in the second half.  Lots of back and forth scoring took place between the two teams, but defense was again a struggle for NJC as they could never really close the gap on the Golden Eagles lead.  Northeastern did again have to look for some help from the bench as the starters continued to find foul trouble.  A late run just wasn't enough for NJC to close the deficit and ultimately could not keep up with the Golden Eagles scoring and good free throw shooting.

Breakdown:  NJC shot failry poor from the field, ending with only a 40% total.  Free throws and three pointers seemed to plague the Plainsmen as they didn't hit the 50% mark in either category.  Sophmore Jared Adams recorded a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds.  Rashon Barron added 9 rebounds and led all Plainsmen scoring with 17 points.  Freshman Keynion Clark came off the bench with a very productive game producing 13 points.  Turnovers were a struggle as Plainsmen tallied 22 while LCCC only recorded 12.
