Aug. 28, 2018, Sterling, Colo. – With a new season upon us, players are excited, coaches are nervous, and fans are eager to see what the future holds. Having the first game of the season on the road is never ideal for a team, but a little adversity never hurt anyone early in the season.
The game began with a bang as Jean Carre scored an goal early in the game, with an assist from Zak Khouiel. The boys kept that 1-0 lead for a while until the 16th minute when the Bruins tied it up, one a piece. Right before halftime, the Bruins took the 2-1 lead over Northeastern as they scored in the 28th minute. At half, the men knew there was a lot of game left for them to mount a comeback, they just needed to play sharp.
In the second half, the Plainsmen tried to mount a comeback, but Salt Lake kept adding points. The game ended in a 4-1 loss for the Plainsmen, which overall was disappointing, but was a learning moment, too. Dillon Rudd ended with five saves off nine shots on goal.
The next day brought a new challenge, but in the form of a Badger. Just like the Salt Lake team, the Snow College team was another tough opponent that the Plainsmen needed to play tough against. With a motivating loss pushing them for this game, the match began. In the seventh minute of play, the Badgers drew first blood with an unassisted goal, making it a 1-0 game. The game went back and forth, with each team trying to put themselves in a position to score, but neither team scoring. The score at halftime was 1-0 with Northeastern trailing.
The second half faired much better for the Plainsmen offensively, but did not improve defensively. Snow took a two-goal lead in the 72nd minute as the Plainsmen scored an own goal. Frustrated, Northeastern wanted to get one back and try to take the lead. Northeastern got a goal in the 78th minute as Jean Carre put one in the back of the net from the foot of Dani Van Steijn. That goal made it a 2-1 game, with very little time to mount a comeback. Time expired, and the Plainsmen fell 2-1 to the Badgers.
Luc Denisselle was in net for the game, and made two saves of four shots on the goal.
