Double Overtime Tie

Double Overtime Tie

Sept. 4, 2018, Sterling, Colo. – After having their first match at home, the Plainsmen soccer team hit the road again and traveled to Iowa to play against Iowa Lakes Community College and Iowa Western Community College. Both games were good for Northeastern as each opponent was talented. The second game of the series was against the Iowa Western Reivers, who were ranked #6 in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association poll.

The first game against the Lakers of Iowa Lakes was a good test for the Plainsmen – the Lakers were a great matchup for them and compared equally in talent. It would end up being a matter of who could execute and capitalize. With the stage set, the game was underway. Iowa Lakes scored first in the 42nd minute to make the Plainsmen trail 1-0. Time expired in the first half, with Northeastern making adjustments. Two minutes into the new half, Dani Van Steijn got the equalizer, making it a 1-1 game. The remainder of the second half consisted of each team trying to get the go-ahead goal, but neither team was successful – resulting in overtime, in which the Lakers got the game-winning goal three minutes in, giving them the 2-1 victory.

Wanting to bounce back after a tough overtime loss, the Plainsmen had a chance at getting the weekend split as they faced the #6 Iowa Western Reivers. Although statistically the Reivers appeared to be the better team, the Plainsmen proved otherwise. Goals by Jean Carre and Jason McCormick kept the men in the game, and sent it into double overtime. Neither team scored after two overtimes, resulting in a 2-2 tie. Even though the Plainsmen did not get the victory, they still tied a ranked team, showing that they're a top-caliber team.

The Plainsmen will be on the road for their next game as they travel to their Region IX opponent, the Trinidad State Trojans, who are also ranked in the country.
