Northeastern Starts Conference 2-0

Sept. 10, 2018, Sterling, Colo. – When it comes time for conference games, the air in the sky gets a little thicker and tensions start to rise. The Region IX has a few teams that are arguably the best in the nation, which leads to teams bringing in all they have to defeat them. One of those teams, Trinidad State, was ranked in the NJCAA polls. Northeastern wanted to prove they were better than a ranked team, so they came out with guns blazing.

The game started with a bang, as Dani van Steijn got the opening goal of the game in the third minute, with the assists coming from Paul Caliari and Quentin Hornung. The Plainsmen took advantage of an opportunity given by the Trojans and were able to capitalize with a goal. The rest of the game was a high intensity match with the Plainsmen trying to add to their score, and the Trojans trying to get one back. The game ended with a 1-0 victory, with the Plainsmen playing great defense and Luc Denisselle blocking everything to come his way in the net.

The next day, Northeastern played against the Otero Junior College Rattlers. The Rattlers proved to be another tough opponent as the game went into overtime. The men had their opportunities, but were never able to get one to land. In overtime, Jean Carre would get the game winner in the 98th minute with the assist coming from Paul Caliari. Those two wins are huge pickups for the men in Region IX conference rankings, and look to keep climbing as season progresses.

The Plainsmen will host the Western Nebraska Cougars and the Western Wyoming Mustangs on September 12 and 13, both starting at 1 p.m.
