Great Offensive Showing for Plainsmen
Sept. 12, 2018, Sterling, Colo.- Playing on your own field has many benefits; knowing how the field plays, not having to spend time on a bus, and having your home crowd to support you. All of those factors came into play for the Plainsmen which helped them soar past the Western Nebraska Cougars. The men's soccer team's last two games went into overtime: one ended in a victory, the other in a tie. The additional time took its toll on the men, and they were ready to finish one in regular time.
The game began with the Plainsmen applying the pressure offensively, which lead to the first goal by Jean Carre. Carre went one on one against a Cougar defender, passing him and drawing out the goal keeper. The keeper made a move on the ball, and with some fancy footwork, Carre danced around him and buried it in the back of the net. The remainder of the half was back and forth, with the Plainsmen dominating possession of the ball.
The second half is where the Plainsmen showed their superiority. The second goal came when Jean Carre played the angles and lofted one from the top right side over the goalie to make it 2-0. Not wanting to be left out, Dani van Steijn scored himself a great, as he took advantage of the goal keeper misplaying a ball outside of the box, and placed the ball in the goal from the corner. The goal-scoring continued for van Steijn as he scored another for the Plainsmen to take them ahead 4-0. As the game progressed, other Plainsmen joined the scoring party as Maurice Von Winkler as well as Quentin Hornung each got a goal. The rest of the game Northeastern was on cruise control and the game finished with the Plainsmen on top, winning 6-0.
The Plainsmen will be back in action tomorrow as they host Western Wyoming at 1pm.
