Plainsmen Finish Regular Season

Oct. 16, 2018, Sterling, Colo. – The Plainsmen soccer team finished their regular season with two road wins against Central Community College and Northeast Community College. Although only the Central game counted towards conference rankings, the men wanted to try to keep their spot in the national rankings. The Plainsmen could win both games if they were able to play the way they knew how, they just needed to lock in and compete.

In the first game against the Central Raiders, the Plainsmen were able to get all of their goals in the first half. The first goal came in the opening two minutes as Dani van Steijn scored from the pass of Jean Carre and Maurice Von Winkler. Shortly after in the fourth minute, Jean Carre made it a 2-0 game with Dani van Steijn and Juan Macias getting the assists. The game continued with the Plainsmen staying on the attack, and in the 21st minute, Jean Carre got his second of the game and Quentin Hornung getting the assist. With Northeastern now leading 3-0, the Plainsmen went in defense mode making sure the Raiders could not make a comeback. Although in cruise control, Maurice Von Winkler scored in the 29th minute with Quentin Hornung and Dani van Steijn getting the assist. That was the final goal scored for either team and the Plainsmen went on to win 4-0 over the Raiders.

The second day featured a much different opponent as the Plainsmen played the Northeast Community College Hawks. These teams had yet to play each other this season, so both teams wanted to deal the other one the loss. As the game began, it was apparent that this match could be a toss-up. It was not until the 30th-minute win the Plainsmen scored the first goal of the game as Zak Khouiel buried one in the back of the net. The first half ended with the Plainsmen having the 1-0 lead. The whole second half, both teams tried to score, but it was the Plainsmen who eventually found success as Jean Carre scored in the 80th minute to make it a 2-0 game.

The Plainsmen finished the regular season with a 14-4-1 record, and now head into post season as one of the top teams in the south division. Their first round game will be held in Sterling on Saturday, Oct. 20. Their opponent has yet to be determined as there are a few games that have yet to be played in the north division.
