Trappers Upset Plainsmen

Oct. 22, 2018, Sterling, Colo. – The Plainsmen soccer team concluded their season this past weekend in the opening round of the Region IX playoffs. The men had been number one in the south division and hosted the number four Northwest College Trappers. Northeastern was favorited to win the game, but in college playoff soccer, every team has the same chance at winning despite rankings. 

The game started and both teams proved they were meant to be there. Both the Plainsmen and Trappers were aggressive in the offense and played sound defensively. The ice breaker came when Jean Carre attacked the zone and was fouled, giving him an opportunity for a penalty kick. Carre capitalized on that kick to give the Plainsmen the 1-0 lead. Northeastern did not keep the lead for long, as the Trappers were able to tie it back up in the next minute of play. At halftime, the game was tied 1-1. 

The second half was one the Plainsmen wish they could have back. Fifteen minutes into the second half, the Trappers took the 2-1 lead with a well-placed kick. What Northeastern did not expect was for the Trappers to score again to take the 3-1 lead in the 76^th minute. With the Plainsmen trailing 3-1, they needed to act fast. The men scored in the 76^th minute as Jean Carre got his second of the game with Paul Caliari getting the assist. Only 11 minutes remained for Northeastern to tie the game, which proved to be not enough as the Plainsmen were upset by the Northwest College Trappers. 

The Plainsmen finished their season with an overall record of 14-5-1, and being ranked as high as 12^th in the nation.
