Plainsmen Clinch Home Playoff Match

Northeastern men's soccer (11-5-2, 8-1-1) completed a season sweep over rivals Western Nebraska Community College with a 3-1 win in Scottsbluff, Neb., on Saturday, Oct. 18. The win officially clinched second place in Region IX for the Plainsmen who will host seven seed Sheridan College in the first round of the playoffs on Saturday, Oct. 26.

In the first half Northeastern controlled the tempo but could not score after forcing five saves from the opposing goalkeeper with 13 shots and 5 corner kicks. In the 29th minute Western Nebraska had a counter attack that forced a big save from freshman goalkeeper Pelayo Quevedo that kept the match tied 0-0.

The second half would see more control from the Plainsmen as it took eight minutes for sophomore Quentin Hornung to score the first goal of the match off an assist from freshman Slayter Andolsek. In the 60th minute, the Plainsmen would score again, Andolsek who would score a strong goal off an assist from Hornung.

After 12 minutes of even play the opponents would get back into the match at 2-1 with a goal from the right side that was crossed in and sailed over the head of Quevedo, off the post and into the net. Two minutes later, Northeastern would quickly squash any hope their opponents gained when Hornung scored his ninth goal of the season off assists from sophomore Wissem Obeid and freshman Scott Philip Woods.

Northeastern finished the match outshooting their opponents 26 to 3 and forced seven saves from the goalkeeper. The win concluded the 10-match Region IX schedule for the Plainsmen, who finished in second place.
