Sophomore Day Concludes Season

Sophomore Day Concludes Season

The Plainswomen softball team concluded their season against the Western Nebraska Cougars. Northeastern has had some ups and downs this season, but their overall goal was to compete in the region and finish better than they did last year, and after looking back, their goal was met. The women would finish the season win an overall record of 18-30, and go 9-21 in conference. Compared to last year, they have seven more conference wins, and 11 more total wins. The sophomore class was a vital part to the overall success from last year to this year, and both of the coaches thank them for that.
Their last regular season games would be against the Western Nebraska Cougars. The game was a battle until the end, but the Plainswomen would be edged out in the final inning. The Cougars would have the 3-0 lead in the top of the second before NJC would score two to bring it within one. The next two innings, WNCC would extend their lead by six points, but Northeastern would get some of them back in the bottom of four by scoring three runs. With the score being 9-5, the ladies needed to mount a comeback. In the bottom of six they would get the score back within one point as they would score a three piece. Northeastern needed to hold the Cougars and get a few to get the win, but WNCC had other plans. The Cougars would add two to their lead, then play solid defense and stop NJC from scoring. The Plainswomen would fall 11-8, but still had one more game to finish on top. Gracie Cordova, Alicia Grauberger, and Riley Johnson would each have a homerun in this game, and Cordova would end with four RBI's.
In the second game, the Plainswomen would let two innings get the best of them and would make it tough for them to come back. With the game tied 2-2 after the second inning, WNCC would get hot and score 13 runs in two innings. Those points would make it tough for Northeastern to make their comeback. The Game would go on and would finish with the Plainswomen falling to the Cougars 15-4. Although their season is finished, the Plainswomen had a successful season and are building on the foundation that these sophomores have laid.
