Apr. 8, 2019, Sterling, Colo. — The Northeastern Plainswomen softball team had a tough four games against the McCook Indians this past weekend. The ladies needed a win after falling in three of their last four games, and McCook was a team they could get a few wins against.
The first game was their worst they played the entire series, as they were not able to get any runs across the plate and fell 5-0 against the Indians. Getting that out of their system was better to do earlier than later, and in the second game, it showed. The Plainswomen allowed McCook to go up 1-0 in the bottom of the second, then tie it 1-1 in the top of the third. As the game progressed, teams exchanged runs and the game was tied 3-3 going into the bottom of the sixth. The Indians tacked on three runs in the bottom of that inning, which resulted in the 6-3 loss for the Plainswomen.
With day one over with, the Plainswomen looked to regroup and play better the second day. The first game had another rough patch as McCook jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Other than that inning, the teams played a very close game. No one scored until the fifth with Northeastern got on the board with a run. McCook was able to get some up there as well when they scored four. In the end, Northeastern fell 9-1.
Needing to get at least one win out of the series, the Plainswomen put all their eggs into the basket and geared up for a battle. Both teams put up their fair share of points in the game, and it started with McCook taking the 2-0 lead after the second inning. Northeastern overtook the lead in the top of the third when they scored three runs. With the score sitting at 3-2, McCook's bats became hot and jumped out to a 10-3 lead after the fourth inning. The Plainswomen battled back and regained some of those points back, but it was too much and they lost 12-8 to the Indians.
The Plainswomen will be at home Friday, Apr. 12 as they host Central Community College beginning at 3 p.m. for a two-game doubleheader.
