Women’s Basketball Has Success in Roundball Classic
Nov 12, 2018, Sterling, Colo. – The Northeastern Plainswomen hosted the Northeastern Roundball Classic on Friday, Nov. 9 and Saturday, Nov. 10, and came away with two wins on the weekend and improved their record to 5-0.
On Friday, Nov. 9, Northeastern hosted Little Priest Tribal College. The Plainswomen came out hot and jumped to a 23-2 lead after the first quarter. The ladies continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and went into half with a 47-9 advantage.
In the second half, Little Priest was able to score better, but Northeastern cruised to the 84-47 victory. Northeastern had five players in double-digit scoring, paced by Alyzae Davis who had 19 points. Tashika Burrell had 15 points, Asia Turner 12, Kennedi Fulwylie 11, and Aleksandra Ratnikava had 10.
On Saturday, Nov. 10, Northeastern faced Region IX North opponent Casper College. In the first quarter, Casper gained a slight advantage, getting out to a 14-10 lead. In the second quarter, Northeastern battled back but still couldn't overtake Casper's lead. Casper went into half time with a 31-24 lead.
In the second half, both teams came out firing, each team hitting 22 points in the quarter. Casper still held the seven-point advantage going into the fourth, leading 53-46.
The fourth quarter proved to be an exciting quarter. Northeastern caught fire in the fourth and knocked down a few three pointers to cut into the lead. With 18.3 seconds remaining in the game, Northeastern was trailing Casper 62 to 63. Aleksandra Ratnikava drove the lane and missed, but got her own rebound and was fouled. With 11.7 seconds on the clock, Ratnikava made two free throws, which gave Northeastern the 64-63 lead. Casper had to foul in the end, and Tashika Burrell knocked down two more free throws while Ratnikava drained one more free throw to give Northeastern the 67-63 victory.
Tashika Burrell led the way for Northeastern with 21 points. Aleksandra Ratnikava followed next with 19 points. Rounding out the scoring was Asia Turner 7, Alyzae Davis 6, Taylor Knudson 5, Marta Rodriguez 4, Kirsten Regennitter 3, and Unique Gainey 2.
