First Quarter Struggles Lead to Loss for Plainswomen

Feb. 18, 2019, Sterling, Colo. — The Northeastern women's basketball team traveled to Scottsbluff, Neb. to play in another Region IX divisional game on Saturday. The Plainswomen are currently sitting as the second seed in the south, and winning over the Cougars could shake up the rankings in the long run.

The first quarter haunted the Plainswomen as the Cougars jumped out to a 26-13 lead. Northeastern fell away from their game plan and played into the Cougars fast-paced game. The Plainswomen could not match Western Nebraska's shooting which led them to trail by 13 points. The second quarter was much better with Northeastern executing their offense and defending keeping scoring even between each other. At halftime, the Plainswomen trailed 43-28. The second half was much like the second quarter with Northeastern settling down and playing their game. The Plainswomen outscored the Cougars in the second half, but the deed was done in the first quarter. The final score read 83-69 with Northeastern coming up short.

Leading in scoring for Northeastern was Alyzae Davis with 18 points, and both Tashika Burrell and Asia Turner had 10.

Despite falling to the Cougars, Northeastern did not drop from the second seed due to Western Nebraska sitting at number one. If the Plainswomen continue to play well, they can lock up the second seed in the division. The Plainswomen play at home against Colorado State University-Club on Monday, Feb. 18 with tip off at 7 p.m.
