Tough Loss Ends Plainswomen Season

Tough Loss Ends Plainswomen Season

Sterling, Colo...

Plainswomen basketball had its share of ups and downs during their season as they were unable to tie a long streak of winning together.  In a region that was dominated by basically one team, NJC had its shot to end the season ranked better in the conference, but lacked the regular season wins to give them a shot at making regionals without having a play-in game.  The loss on Sunday in front of the home crowd ended the Northeastern season early.  The off-season for the Plainswomen will consist of having to replace three sophomore starters who scored 85-90% of their points in each game this season.

(Game Recap 2/27) Plainswomen vs. Otero College = Loss 72-63

1st Quarter - Evenly matched first quarter.  End of the 1st 17-17 tied.

2nd Quarter - Otero makes a run, outscores NJC.  Halftime score was 35-27 OC.

3rd Quarter - NJC has a hot quarter, decreased deficit.  End of 3rd 55-50 OC.

4th Quarter - Otero won the free throw battle.  Final score ended 72-63 OC.

Breakdown: NJC played a solid game with the exception of the 2nd quarter.  For two evenly matched teams, it is hard to lose a quarter by more than 5 and hope to make that comeback without making some big stops.  At the end of the game, it came down to fouls and free throws, and Otero locked the game up by only missing one.  Filippa Goula led the charge scoring 17 points while sophomore Nailea Nicholas was right on her tail scoring 16. Liana Gkompetzisvili was able to get in 10 points as well during the contest.
