HOME SWEET HOME: NJC golf returns to Sterling for home tournament

After a two week road trip that saw them traverse Wyoming and Nebraska, the Northeastern Junior College golf team found themselves right at home on Friday at Riverview Golf Course. The Plainsmen and Plainswomen hosted the NJC Event right here in Sterling, and the results speak for themselves. The women's team finished in 2nd place at +118 for a final score of 406.
Darian Mehling led the 2nd place Plainswomen individually, just as she has in every tournament this season. Mehling finished 5th place among individuals at +25 for a final score of 97.
Mehling's teammates Tiara Ginther and Payton Wallace kept her company near the top of the leader board. The the outstanding pair finished tied for 8th place at +30 for 102.
The Plainswomen ended up with four golfers in the top ten thanks to a great day by Ky Monaco. She took 10th place after finishing +33 for 105.
NJC nearly claimed half of the top ten in the women's field. Hope Dutton followed her three teammates closely as she took 11th place, finishing +36 for 108.
Finally, Jessica Carrigan finished the day in 13th place as she finished +52 for 126.
All in all, it was a successful day for both teams. Be prepared, however, because head coach Vernon Harbart feels that NJC's best has yet to come.
"We did okay," he said. "We could've done a lot better with it being our home course. We tied for third so I wish somebody would've made just one more putt."
The Plainsmen and Plainswomen will be back in action next Friday as they compete in the Otero Junior College Dual in La Junta, Colorado. Before that, though, NJC will host the Bank of Colorado Scramble fundraiser at Riverview Golf Course. The Scramble begins at 9:00 am and all proceeds will go to benefit NJC golf.
