Four Grapplers Finish Top Four

The Plainsmen wrestling team traveled to Powell, WY for the Northwest Wyoming Open.  The Plainsmen had recently came off a loss to Northwest Kansas Tech in a duel, so this open would give a chance for the coaching staff to see who has improved or who could fill a different slot in a weight class.

In the 125 lbs division, Collin Metzgar would win his first matchup against an opponent from Northwest College by defeating him by a pin at the 1:22 point.  His next opponent would be from the University of Providence where he lost by a pin in the second period.  The next person was from Montana State where he was defeated early by a pin 48 second in.

In the 133 open, Paul Cooksey would represent NJC, and would fall his first matchup by a 9-2 decision.  His next opponent, Cooksey would win by pin late in the second periond against an unattached wrestler from University of Providence.  Cooksey would go on to win his next match by 9-1 major.  His last match he would lose by an 11-3 major, which was one match away from being in third place.

In the 141 open, Sammy Eckhart and Jordan Jackson both competed in that weight class.  Jackson lost back to back which would end his day early, but Eckhart was able to win that weight class.  Eckhart's first match he won by pin in the first period at the 1:54 mark., his second by pinning the guy in the first, third by pin again in the first, and the final won the tournament by pinning his opponent.

In the 149's, Ernie Quintana was the one to represent the Plainsmen.  Quintana lost his first matchup by being pinned early in the first, and won his next by a 6-3 decision.  In his last match, he lost by pin in the third.

In the 157's, both Matt Macarus and Deron Solomon would compete.  Macarus would lose his first match by a 3-2 decision, but would come back to win his second match by a pin.  His final loss would be by a 9-2 decision.  Solomon on the other hand had a very successful day.  His first matchup he would face an opponent from Montana State and lose by a pin right at the end of the second.  From there he won out and would take the third place spot for the tournament.

In the 165's, the Plainsmen would be represented by Juan Gomez, Ian Vigil, and Justin Anderson.  Gomez would go one and two in the day by falling in his first match, winning his second, and then losing his third.  Vigil had a rough day when he lost the first matchup by a pin in the second and then losing by pin again in the first.  Anderson did however end up placing third by coming back after losing his first match by a 3-2 decision, then winning out to allow him to place.

Tyler Duff and Kaelan Jones would wrestling in the 174's for the Plainsmen.  Duff would lose his first match, and then would face Jones after he had won in a 9-8 decision then fall to a tough opponent.  Jones would defeat Duff in a 7-3 decision.  Jones would then go on to wrestle in the third place final but would lose.

In the 184's, Tanai Gill would go one and two on the day as he lost his opening match by a pin, but would follow it up by winning in a 6-5 decision.  The next matchup however he would win with a 6-5 decision, but then lose his last match by technical fall 18-2.

In the 197's, Dylan Buschow and Jose Rodriquez would be the two to wrestle in that weight class.  Buschow would drop his first match by a 6-0 decision, win his next by pinning his opponent in the first, then lose in a 7-0 decision.  Rodriquez had a tough day at the office when he lost his first match by technical fall 15-0, then losing by a 3-2 decision in his next match.

Zachary Rowland was the lone wolf in the 285's for the Plainsmen.  Rowland looks to improve at the next tournament after losing twice by pins in the first.

The Plainsmen will travel to Rock Springs, WY to duel Western Wyoming on Tuesday November 21.
