Mendoza Accepts Position at Colorado Mesa University

Mar. 28, 2019, Sterling, Colo. — Plainsmen wrestling coach, Mike Mendoza, has recently accepted a new position at Colorado Mesa University (CMU) in Grand Junction, Colo. He was the wrestling coach at Northeastern for the past two seasons. In that time, he coached 13 wrestlers to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national tournament, with the latest tournament sending nine. Of those 13 athletes who qualified, two earned the title as All-Americans. He was recognized for his success within the Region IX by being named Region IX coach of the year in 2019.

"While my time at Northeastern has been short, it has been a special time in my career," commented Mendoza. "I can't thank the administration, faculty and staff enough for the tremendous amount of support over the past two years. The success and progress accomplished with the Plainsmen wrestling program would not have been possible without their commitment."

Mendoza was named as the Mavericks assistant coach this week and will begin Apr. 1. He ended by saying "It has been a pleasure coaching at Northeastern and look forward to recruiting Plainsmen to Colorado Mesa in the future."

With him moving on, his assistant Adam Fierro will step in as the interim head coach.
