Northeastern Wrestling Produces Another All-American

Council Bluffs, IA...

Northeastern qualified 7 wrestlers for the 2022 NJCAA National Championships after the regional tournament this past weekend.  Unfortunately 133 pounder Layne Shepherd suffered a late ankle injury and was unable to compete at the National Tournament, leaving 6 guys to compete for the Plainsmen.  Although all 6 wrestlers got seeded in the top 16 at the tournament, nobody was seeded in the top 10 heading into competition, so the team knew they would have to win some on paper upsets to break the top 8.  Overall, Northeastern earned one All-American spot with #12 Seed, 125 Pounder Braydon Mogle's 7th place finish.  Braydon won 5 matches on his way to the podium including 2 Technical Falls, 2 Major Decisions, and 1 Decision win.

The other stand out wrestler last weekend was #11 Seed Tucker Naccarato.  Naccarato suffered his first loss to #6 Seeded Dayton Fields of Northeast Oklahoma in a nail biter with a final score of 3-2.  Tucker fought back to the blood round where he would have to face the #1 ranked wrestler in the country, Christian Smoot of Western Wyoming.  Tucker held the lead for the entire match and with 50 second left, Smoot got in on a single leg trailing 2-3. Naccarato fought off the shot for 40 seconds when Smoot secured the takedown with just 6 seconds remaining putting him up 4-3. Unable to escape with short time, Naccarato lost a heart breaking match that would have put himself on the podium along with Braydon Mogle.

In the end, Northeastern finished the tournament 21st overall with 18 team points. Coach Campbell and Coach Duncan were very pleased with the team's performance at nationals and felt many of the wrestlers wrestled their best matches all season. Northeastern will return all 7 qualifiers next season, along with new recruits and other guys who were injured this season. With a good off season training period, the Plainsmen hope to climb the ranks in the team standings next year and cannot wait for the 2022-2023 season to begin!
