Plainswomen Bounce Back

Plainswomen Bounce Back

Oct. 1, 2018, Sterling, Colo. – The Plainswomen soccer team hosted two Region IX conference opponents this past weekend. The first day they played the Otero Rattlers, and the second day against the Trinidad State Trojans. The ladies have hunted for goals each game to get them on the winning side of the scoreboard, so these games looked promising.

The first day against Otero was a physical game. The Plainswomen fell behind early to trail 2-0 at half. In the second, they changed up their offensive and defensive schemes, and everything started to click. Michele Pelino broke the ice to score her first collegiate goal, which made Northeastern only trail by one. Lillian Nordell scored the equalizer from the corner on a cross that buried itself in the back of the net. The game ended regulation as a tie and went into overtime. In the first overtime, both teams had their opportunities, but neither had success which sent the game into double overtime. In the final overtime, the Rattlers found success and defeated the Plainswomen 3-2. Although it deflated Northeastern, the ladies battled and showed heart, which was something they were looking to accomplish.

Day two featured the ladies playing the Trinidad State Trojans. After the loss the day before, the ladies were seeking vengeance in the form of the victory. In the first half, the Plainswomen were on the attack. Numerous times they were in the Trojans' zone and had chances to score. Northeastern connected when Lillian Nordell centered a pass from the corner, and Jaycie Dillenburg chipped it in to take the 1-0 lead. As the game progressed, the Trojans too had opportunity to score, but goal keeper Nohelia Pena snuffed their attempts. In the second, with less than 10 minutes of play, Jaycie Dillenburg had her second of the game when Jasmin Ghafoerkhan dished her up with an assist.

The game finished with the Plainswomen earning the victory. They will be on the road the next two games before returning Saturday Oct. 13 at home to play Northwest College for sophomore day.
