The Northeastern Women's soccer team concluded their regular season over the weekend against Western Nebraska Community College (WNCC) and Colorado Northwestern Community College (CNCC).
The team headed to Scottsbluff, NE on Oct. 19 for their final Region IX game with tournament seeding on the line. The Plainswomen penetrated the Cougar backline several times in the first half hour, getting good looks at goal, but were not able finish their chances. WNCC put in the opening goal in the 36th minute from a cross that became loose in the box and the teams headed into half with the 1-0 score.
NJC came out with an aggressive mindset in the second half and had two great opportunities in a row to equalize. Unfortunately, the first was saved by the keeper and the rebound was kicked over the crossbar. WNCC added their second goal in the 51st minute, and the Plainswomen were forced to open up to chase goals for the remainder of the game. This openness allowed the Cougars to add a third goal in the 83rd minute for the final 3-0 score.
On Monday, Oct. 21, the Plainswomen hosted CNCC for their final regular season matchup. The scoring came early and often for NJC as freshman Tatiana Rivera found the back of the net in the third minute. Rivera would go on to tally another goal in the fifth, and again in the 10th minute for a hat trick. Freshman Rowan Horstmeier added to the lead with a brace in the 23rd and 33rd minute, and freshman Amber Hurtado found the scoresheet in the 36th. With the team holding a comfortable lead, the Plainswomen focused mostly on maintaining ball possession in the second half. Rivera put in another goal in the 70th minute for the final 7-0 score. Freshman Jaya Trujillo, sophomore Emali Ortega, freshman Courtney Dinkel, Horstmeier, and Rivera all picked up assists on the afternoon. The four goals tallied by Rivera equals a school record for most goals in a game.
The Plainswomen end the regular season with a 9-7 record, their first winning record in the program's history that started in 2016. They finish Region IX with a 5-5 record which qualifies them for the postseason.
