Volleyball Begins Season With Victory

Aug. 24, 2018, Sterling, Colo. – The Plainswomen volleyball team opened their season by traveling to Casper College in Wyoming to play in the Casper Invite. The ladies were anxious to get the season started after all the hard work they had put in during the preseason, and the Thunderbirds were a good test for them. Additionally, it was a good road trip to get the freshmen accustomed to the grind of a college season with having to travel and play, all in the same day.

The first set for Northeastern was a back-and-forth battle, and stretched for a few points before the Thunderbirds took the 29-27 victory over Northeastern. After the Plainswomen got through those first-set jitters, they got into a groove for set two and defeated Casper 25-19. Set three favored the T-birds as they edged out NJC by pulling ahead in the last few points and winning 25-22. The ladies knew they had to get the next two sets to be able to come away with the victory, so they locked in and played the way they know how. Set four went down with NJC dominating Casper 25-15, pushing it into set five. In the fifth and final set, the Plainswomen rallied and won it 15-12, giving them the season's opening win.

Top offensive performer for the match was Sara Antic, who accumulated 17 kills.

Top defensive performer for the match was MacKenzie Wells, who accumulated 14 digs.

The Plainswomen will continue to play in Casper throughout Friday and Saturday in the Casper tournament. Their first home game will take play on Thursday, Sept. 13 as they host Sheridan College for the Pizza Hut Invitational.
