Plainswomen Go 2-1 Over Weekend

Oct. 1, 2018, Sterling, Colo. – The nationally ranked Plainswomen had a tough road game this past weekend by traveling to southern Colorado to play against Region IX opponents. Being ranked at number 20 only means that games will become tougher and the ladies have to play every set hard because the opponents are trying to knock them out of the polls.

The first game of the series featured the Lamar Lopes, who are a team capable of defeating the Plainswomen if they did not come and take care of business, which was exactly what happened. Northeastern struggled against Lamar by not being able to get ahead. The Plainswomen won the first set, but dropped the next three. That match was a teachable moment for the Plainswomen to show them they must play their best to be the top team in the Region IX.

With that game behind them, Northeastern prepared for their next match against Trinidad. Like Lamar, the Trojans are a team that if not handled, could also hand the Plainswomen a loss. Knowing they didn't want to be served another loss, the Plainswomen came out and swept the Trojans in three. Kacey Jaeger led the team in kills with 15, and Ashlyn Martinez had 11.

Their final game of the weekend series was against the Otero Rattlers. Being that it was the last day of a three-game weekend series, the Plainswomen needed to shake off any tiredness they had and buckle down and play. The first set was a wakeup call for Northeastern as they were defeated 25-16 by the Rattlers. From that point on, it was all Plainswomen as they won the next three sets. Sara Antic led in stats with 14 kills, 10 digs and four aces. Defensively, MacKenzie Wells had 11 digs with two aces.

The Plainswomen will host the McCook Indians on Tuesday Oct. 2 for their "Pink Out" game.
